Darkness at noon

21 December 2009

Tour operator Scuba Travel is offering divers the chance to witness a major forthcoming astronomical event in a novel way.

"On the 15 January 2010, at approximately 12 noon, one of the best places in the world to see the annual solar eclipse will be the Maldives," says the company. "This event won't happen again in the Maldives for another 6000 years - this is definitely one for your log book!"

Explaining that the eclipse will last about 11 minutes and is estimated to be 91% total, Scuba Travel says that it has several options for the Maldives during this period, including itineraries featuring a "unique night dive in the middle of the day" from its liveaboards Orion and Monsoon.

"This is a dive that can't be done anywhere else on the planet! This is sure to provide an interesting dive - what will the marine life do?"

Solar Eclipse liveaboard holiday prices from Scuba Travel start at £1795 for Monsoon (10-18 January) including flights, transfers, 7 nights' full board, 12ltr tank and weights; and £2295 for Orion (10-21 January) including flights, transfers, 10 nights' full board, nitrox, 12ltr tank and weights.
