Saturday is World Oceans Day

Turtle Net

World Oceans Day is set for next Saturday (8 June), and more than 50 official events have been organised around the British Isles, ranging from beach-cleans, barbecues and film screenings to debates.

Scuba divers wishing to get involved can check here to find events either within easy reach or that might fit in with a UK diving weekend.

Beach-cleaning events are taking place at Alnwick; Bardsea; Blackhall; Burry Port; Croyde; East Portlemouth; Mawbray; Padstow; Port Ballintrae; Portstewart Strand; Silloth; Tynemouth and Weymouth.

Ghost Fishing UK is carrying out a fishing-net removal at Portland Marina.

The majority of other events, some of which also include beach-cleans, are taking place in England: Birmingham (Inspired Family Day); Bishop’s Stortford (Save Our Seas); Bridlington (Plastic Money Bottles); Brighton (Oceans Connected Winter Summit); Bristol (Festival of Nature); Broadstairs (walk); Brownsea Island, Poole (week-long programme); Cambridge (seminar); Chester (Reduced Single Use Plastics Week); Clevedon (schools event); Exmouth; Flamborough (Living Seas Centre), Gloucester (Quiz Trail); Hull (Save Us book signing at The Deep); Liverpool (Plastic Paddle); London (Project O / Soho Music Month); Maryport; Milton Keynes (Creative Writing & Art Competition); Minehead (Turning The Tide at Dunster Beach); Plymouth (festival); Scarborough (Wave Power / ocean pollution debate); Shuttlewood (school event); Southampton (Marine Citizen Science Day / National Oceanography Centre Open Day); Sunderland (Hope Street XChange); Wareham (Rubber Jellyfish film screening).

World Oceans Day events in Wales take place at Goodwick (Ocean Lab); Llanfairpwll and Portcawl (Family Beach Fest) and in Scotland at Port William and Stirling (weekend).

Ireland is celebrating the day in Dingle (Go AtlanticBlue); Dublin (Our Ocean, Our Health – Pilates by the Sea); Galway City (Sea Art Stories Inspire Change); Milton Malbay (Dive Academy); and Waterville (party).

Greenpeace is holding some 30 of its own events around the UK and attending others – and it’s asking supporters to turn up dressed and prepared to be face-painted in blue to create human waves.

“Sounds strange but we promise it will be great fun!” says the environmental group, which is raising awareness of its Protect the Oceans campaign and asking the UK Government to champion a strong global oceans treaty as world leaders negotiate at the UN this year.

Do Miflex hoses need to be replaced regularly? One service tech I spoke to said they need to be replaced every 5 yrs. can’t find anything on their website or brochure about it so I wonder if it’s obsolete news related to the rubber failure issue they used to have?
