Adopt a manta this Christmas!

The Manta Trust has dived early into the festive season with what it describes as “2019’s best eco-Christmas gift for that impossible-to-buy-for person in your life”.

The Dorset-based charity says that its Manta Ray Adoption gift-packs are suitable for all ages. They include a biography and poster of the adopted manta, a manta ray fact-file, activity pack and personalised certificate, with the £20 price going towards manta research and conservation work around the world.

Until 22 December the trust is offering “limited edition” packs for mantas dubbed Manta Claus and the Grinch.

Other rays available to adopt year-round include Babaganoush, which made a miraculous recovery from near-fatal injuries following a speedboat strike in 2018, as reported on Divernet, and Mr Spotty, said to have the most spot markings of the nearly 5000 mantas identified in the Maldives to date.

Manta and devil rays are extremely vulnerable to overfishing, says the Manta Trust. Some fisheries target them for their gills for use in Asian “medicines”, while many others are victims of by-catch, or endangered through habitat destruction, pollution, irresponsible tourism and the effects of climate change. “As a result, manta and devil rays are now some of the most threatened fish in our seas,” says the trust.

Conscious that “research has shown that waste can double over Christmas”, the Manta Trust says that its adoption packs consider the environment by virtue of being digital.

“They are sent via email, so they can be printed at home to create plastic-free stocking fillers,” it says. “Our great mix of flappy friends means there’s a manta ray to suit everyone!”
