Shopping and giving with PADI

Black Friday

Pre-Christmas marketing initiatives “Black Friday” (29 November) and “Cyber Monday” (2 December) might not be everyone’s idea of fun, but training agency PADI claims to be using the annual shopping-spree days to “help save the planet above and below the surface”.

On the two days would-be and existing divers are being offered 10% off a PADI Open Water, Advanced Open Water or Rescue Diver e-learning course bought online.

PADI then pledges to donate 10% of the proceeds from the promotion to an ocean-conservation charity. The courses normally cost £122.72 each, so you save just over £12 and the same amount goes to the charity.

“Giving Tuesday” was started in 2012 as a response to the rampant consumerism of the preceding Friday and Monday – and PADI is up for that too.

It says it will be giving 20% of all proceeds from the same three e-learning courses bought online on 3 December to marine-conservation charity Project AWARE.
