Thai police try to ID dead diver

Diving News

A male diver with his throat cut was found tied to a concrete post near Koh Lan island, off the Thai resort of Pattaya, on 16 December.

The man has yet to be identified, but from his build police believe that he was a Westerner. He was 5ft 6-7in tall, believed to be aged 45 to 50 and wearing a black Mares wetsuit and fins. He was carrying 1500 baht (about £34).

The Bangkok Post reported that the diver was tied to the post by his backpack – presumably his BC. Police divers retrieved a cutter, snorkel, swimming-cap, goggles and other items from the seabed near the post, which lies about 200m off Samae Beach and is used for attaching buoys. The items were being checked by forensic experts, and the body was sent to Bangkok for an autopsy.

With no reports of missing persons, police issued an appeal for anyone with information to come forward. A dive-shop owner in Pattaya has reportedly told investigators that the man resembled one of his clients.
