Clarke breaks Irish freedive record

Eóin Clarke broke an Irish national record at the second annual Bristol Blue Freediving Competition with a 137m swim in the Dynamic No Fins event, and came third overall among male divers in the two-day event on 21/22 October.

Other category and overall winners were all UK freedivers.

Overall male and female winners of the competition were Mike Board and Lucelle Simms, who led their fields in the Dynamic Apnea discipline with 200m and 134m swims respectively.

The competition covered the three main pool disciplines. In the male Static Apnea event Adam Drzazga triumphed with a 6min 35sec breath-hold, while top female Hannah Thurston-McGowan managed 5min 8sec. Beci Ryan was first among the women in Dynamic No Fins with a 120m swim.

The competition at Horfield Leisure Centre was hosted by Bristol Freedivers. “We had competitors from eight different nationalities and 18 PBs were set,“ said founder-member and competition organiser Andy Jardine.

“It’s great that we had six different winners for each discipline, too, which highlights what a strong field of competitors there was. We’re already planning for bigger and better in 2018!”
