Hot on the heels of Dan Burton's recent DIVER Magazine feature on diving in Madagascar, Aqua-Firma has introduced an adventure package called Madagascar Whale Shark Research – Islands, Humpback Whales & Lemurs. You could join a team of marine biologists and photographers researching an endangered whale-shark population.
Additional to existing whale-shark projects in Mexico and Tanzania, Aqua-Firma’s new venture is based on aggregations that take place in October and November, with 130 individuals already identified.
The operator says that schools of 100-plus bonito tuna and diving seabirds often accompany the sharks, along with mating and breeding humpback whales.
Add possible sightings of rare Omura’s whales, dolphins, turtles, giant mobula rays and leopard sharks plus lemurs and other land creatures and it’s a wildlife wonderland.
Snorkelling takes place with the whale sharks but scuba-diving experiences are also available.
The trip, which includes evening talks and optional free photography workshops, runs from 10-17 October and costs £1790pp plus flights.
