Dr Richard ‘Harry’ Harris, who sprang to worldwide fame as part of the global team who descended on Thailand to locate and rescue the members of the Wild Boars football team, is giving two outstanding talks on the Main Stage at the GO Diving Show ANZ in September.
Harry, who has worked in anaesthesia, diving and aeromedical medicine around the world, has a passion for cave diving that goes back to the 1980s and has taken him to the corners of the globe in search of new adventures.
His captivating talks will be:
The Lure of the Deep
Harry explains how his interest in deep technical diving arose and how he has used his experience and knowledge to explore some of the world’s deepest caves. The latest expedition to Bushman’s Hole in South Africa ended in a dive to nearly 284m, and a brush with decompression sickness.
Voodoo gas 2.0 – Hydrogen in Deep Diving
The use of hydrogen to push the limits of deep diving is not a new concept. But in 2023, Harry was the first person to dive a closed circuit rebreather containing hydrogen, to lower gas density and reduce HPNS with the aim of enhancing safety in dives beyond 250m. This talk will describe how he got to that point, and what has happened since.
