Wringing every drop out of the prestigious annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition – and why not? – organiser the Natural History Museum launches its People’s Choice Award today (9 January).

You have until 5 February if you want to help to put an underwater photo in the frame.

There are 24 images from which to choose, pre-selected by the NHM from almost 50,000 submissions from 92 countries, and including four underwater photographs.

The People’s Choice Award winner will be showcased in the current Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the NHM in London until its close on 28 May this year. The top five images will also be displayed online at wildlifephotographeroftheyear.com

The underwater images are Elegant Mother and Calf by Ray Chin (Taiwan); Warning Wings by Mike Harterink (The Netherlands); Hammerhead by Adriana Basques (Brazil/USA); and Cleaning Session by Jordi Chias Pujol (Spain).

Pujol’s image (pictured here) was taken in Spain’s Medes Islands, where sunfish visit in spring to be cleaned by wrasse.
