The COVID-19 pandemic is now having a negative effect off the coast of Antibes on the Cote d’Azur in southern France, with the discovery of discarded masks and gloves littering the seabed.
French environmental group Operation Mer Propre (Operation Clean Sea) has filmed masks and gloves on the bottom in the waters of the Mediterranean near Golfe-Juan. The group said it was appalled by this coronavirus problem, which only grows the existing plastic pollution issues in our oceans.
Laurent Lombard, Operation Mer Propre’s founder, shot the footage while on a dive, during which he found five face masks and four latex gloves, among the usual bottles, bags, etc.
There had previously been concerns about used masks and gloves being dropped in car parks and on streets, etc, with fears that they would end up in our waterways.
