Working from home has become the new norm for many people during the COVID-19 pandemic, and now working remotely could be taken to a whole new level, as Barbados is considering letting visitors on to the island for 12 months.
Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has said the Caribbean island is looking at a 12-month ‘Barbados Welcome Stamp', which would allow tourists to stay in-country for a whole year.
“COVID-19 has presented tremendous challenges to those countries that are tourism and travel dependent, and we have reached a position where we recognize that part of the challenge relates to short-term travel,” said the Prime Minister.
“So, if we can have a mechanism that allows people who want to… take advantage of being in a different part of the world, of the sun, sea and sand, and… a stable society; one that functions well, then Barbados is a perfect place for you to come.”
Those who head to Barbados would be able to stay in hotels, rental properties, villas and condos, and workspaces would be available. It is anticipated the initiative will start from 1 August.
