Macro creatures are something you don’t see easily on the Great Barrier Reef, instead, you must have patience and a basic understanding of the reef. Much of the macro life is tucked into seaweed, coral branches or even algae, once you start looking, you’ll be amazed at what you can find.

It is always best to have your camera set up and ready to go at a moment’s notice when focussing on macro as the perfect shot may only be a few seconds worth of interaction. Remember, you are far bigger than them and they spend their entire lives watching out for larger predators that may eat them, that includes you in their minds!

People will often ask me, ‘why are you lying on the bottom, looking at nothing?’ when in actual fact, they just cant see what I can. As time goes by, I am finding the Canon R5 a great piece of equipment to work with, especially for macro. It may not be the camera for everyone, but it is one of the top cameras on the market for stills.

Blink and you’ll miss it, the motto for macro photography. So, always be ready, always keep a sharp eye out and you never know what you will find.
