The UK freediving team of five set to compete at the upcoming Individual AIDA Pool World Championship in Turku, Finland, has been announced by the British Freediving Association.
Two of the three women in the team rank within the world’s top 10 in their categories: Alice Hickson (Static Apnea and Dynamic Apnea Without Fins) and Georgina Miller (Static Apnea). The other competitors are Lucelle Simms, Philip Fennell and Mark Gooding. Team coach and captain is Andy Jardine.
The eight-day annual event runs from 25 June to 3 July and this year features 96 freedivers from 21 countries – 59 men and 37 women. According to AIDA Finland, there is a 38-year age difference between the youngest and oldest competitors.
Alice Hickson came from being unknown to winning gold in Dynamic Apnea Without Fins and bronze in Static Apnea at last year’s event in Belgrade, and became World Champion in the process. Other UK freedivers succeeded in reaching the finals.
The self-funded UK team is sponsored by divewear clothing company Divesangha.
