All New Divers Make This Mistake!

Well maybe not all new divers, but we're confident that a good majority of scuba divers forget they learned to dive to actually go diving, and not just continue with more training.

#ASKMARK Hello Mark, while out diving recently I talked to an experienced diver who was diving with twins but did not have any manifold on them, i.e. each cylinder had a first stage with a primary and an SPG. One cylinder had the low pressure inflator for his BC. What are the pros and cons of a manifold setup versus independent twins?

Are you guilty of this mistake?

I haven’t signed up for anything yet either. I’ve been certified since July and I’ve already gone on about 30 dives :) Some shallow solo dives at the beach, just to practice my buoyancy but I’ve done about 5-6 dives with a buddy at 30′-50′ :)
I do plan on getting my tech diving certification next summer just so I can get certified for Twinsets, as I own two tanks :)

You should always dive with a buddy, even if only in shallow water. Lots of accidents happen in that 5-10m range for various reason and without a buddy there is no chance of help.

Agreed. It’s all dependent on what you want. I rolled in into dive master course with min required dives, and blasted thru. Never worked in dive industry, but will inroll in IDC in few years. I have some nice plans for early retirement 😂😂

Totally agree, you need to get comfortable diving as an open water diver before going on to becoming an advanced open water diver. There are too many skills you need to be proficient at before going deeper than 18m. To some a 30m dive can be a harrowing experience, you panic, you die, at 30m that can be a very real out come. There’s no rush, it’s not a race to see how many new certs you can get. The only important thing to learn is to dive safely. Plan the dive and dive the plan. There seems to be only one agency that I’ve found that pushes newly qualified open water divers to the next course and that is… Well I’m sure most of you will know which one that is.

Thank you very much for this video. It is really not so obvious as may looks like. And therm “pressure” fits perfect for this cases.

I find that open water divers who continue immediately into the advanced open water course are far more comfortable after they’ve done the additional five dives with an instructor. I find that people who don’t do their advanced open water course after their certified tend to dive with other divers and pick up bad habits. Sometimes those habits are unsafe. So as a Course Director and Instructor I absolutely encourage students to take at least the advanced open water course as soon as possible after their open water course.

There is nothing to say against taking some extra guided dives with an instructor after your open water certification but i think it is missleading to give somebody a certificate „advanced“ with only five dives „experience“. Join a dive-club or find a buddy with experience and go diving. Do some training in the essential skills and get confidence. Than do your advanced certificate.

I was certified by the YNCA in 1976 one day a week for 12 weeks and then trained by DRI, dry suit the poseidon unisuit surface air in a Kirby Morgan with communications and a number about 12 of other certifications the only game in town back in the day.

I became a diver primarily for exploring shipwrecks. Problem I’ve found is that most shipwrecks are beyond the 60ft limit of OW certification, so AOW has become a priority for me.

If there is a reason or desire to go deeper, etc, then that is a perfect excuse for doing more certs. I am a wreckie too!

Good advice. I once met someone who was intent on doing PADI Rescue and 5 specialities, all in 2 weeks, so they could get their 50 dives and be a ‘Master Scuba Diver’. And at that point they considered their education would be over. I should add that those 5 specialities included Fish ID, Project Aware and Underwater Videographer. Needless to say the basics were still poor. People do need time away from teaching to consolidate. And I’d say whenever possible to dive with people who are better than you so you have positive role models to follow. But still continue with your learning; it should never be over!

You never stop learning, that’s my mantra with diving. Even after 37 years, still see and learn new stuff from diving with other divers.

My OW students got hammered with mask removal and replacement in the pool to the point where it became a non-issue to them.

if your new and comfortable in the water. in a small pond with a buddy try mishap skills. take your reg out of your mouth put it back in and purge it. there’s videos to teach you to blow bubble rings. be comfortable in stopping a freeflow. ie put your thumb over the hole in your mouthpiece. take your mask off and put it back on and then clear your mask. i actually do this with my eyes closed especially in salt water until i think its clear. release an smb at 20′. that are tons of videos to learn these skills.
