I have 3 basic questions, heard different opinions about these

1. Do we need to keep the purge valve pressed when opening the tank valve? I was not taught this nor I had ever seen this before, till I saw some people do it on a boat. When asked, they said they were taught this to protect the regulators.

2. While swimming on the surface against current and in full gear, is it better to be on your back or have your face in the water?

3. For a boat entry, I was taught to inflate the bcd in the water. I never thought to question this during the course, but in some boats I was told to inflate first and then get in. Which is better? Does it depend on the type of entry i.e. stride or back roll?

#askmark: if after a dive I realize I can't make the 2nd dive (cold, feeling weak, back pain, etc…), can I still join my friends by freediving above them? Fab', Dubai.

#AskMark Hi Mark, I'm looking for my first drysuit and I’m very interested in the Avatar 101. Would you recommend that one for diving in Europe (Germany)? How is the quality? Or do you think there are better alternatives in this price range out there? Thanks for answering and safe diving 🙂

The pressure of pressurise your hoses can also make the SPG lame. Long story short the mechanism that is inside the SPG can go lame when it takes a hit time and time again. When your SPG needle/mechanism doesn’t work properly it can read 20 or 30 bar when in fact it can be way less or completely empty.

Really disappointed to hear that #AskMark is changing to short format TikTok/YouTube Shorts type videos. For those of us who stay away from that type of thing (which I would imagine are the majority of your subscribers) it’s going to lose some of your viewership for sure. If something’s not broke, why fix it?

#AskMark I currently use an octo setup with my primary on a necklace which i like very much. If my primary slips out of my mouth or gets kicked loose i know right where it is. I’d like to switch to a primary donate setup but don’t want to give up my necklace. Is there a way to have my cake and eat it too? Thanks John

Yes, and you already have the setup. If you dive the long hose primary and it gets knocked out of your mouth then your alternate is still in a necklace around your neck to swap to. Then you have time to sweep and find the long hose and swap back.

Your long hose can’t really be on a necklace as it will get in the way when donating but, you always have the safety of your AAS around your neck.

Thanks Mark. I had a thought though. What about one of those detachable necklaces on the long hose? The ones that pull off the mouthpiece not bungeed on with a zip tie. Would that work?

I usually hold the BCD inflation button while opening the tank, have to inflate it anyway, plus it’s not as noisy

Just to clarify, you can scuba after scuba but you can’t apnea after scuba? I presume the primary reason is because in apnea, you’re essentially making a free ascent or the equivalent of a CESA as opposed to a more controlled scuba type ascent?

Instead of buying the Avatar I would invest my money into a Seaskin Nova, fully equipped and made to measure drysuit. Same price, depending on the country even cheaper.
