Can I Put a Necklace on My Primary? #AskMark #scuba
@391wombat
#AskMark I currently use an octo setup with my primary on a necklace which I like very much. If my primary slips out of my mouth or gets kicked loose I know right where it is. I’d like to switch to a primary donate setup but don’t want to give up my necklace. Is there a way to have my cake and eat it too? Thanks John

Hello Mark, I’ve been wanting to try the necklace set up for a while. I have a regular Primary octo set up. Is it okay to use the octo underarm setup on a necklace? I’ve read that it’s mainly used with a long hose set up which wouldn’t be as useful in the tropics as in other dives.
If the octo is in a necklace around your neck then it makes it very difficult to donate to your buddy. You can put the necklace on your primary on the short hose so that if it’s ever knocked out of your mouth it stays nearby. But I’d leave the octo as quick release.
@Scuba Diver Magazine I was talking to my Dive instructor last night, they are going back to teaching primary donate protocol. In that case would it be acceptable to mantain octo in necklace with hose going under arm to be accesible while I donate my primaru to a fellow diver?

Is it a baby toy playing in background ?
Or I dive too much and went crazy ? 🤣
Maybe, Jack’s 3 months old now and has some sensory playmats that make noise
If you really want to use a necklace on your primary, you basically have the “DIR COVID” configuration. I always checked whether my buddies were happy with PD, and if not, my usual long hose primary was clipped off on a break-away (a spare O-ring cable-tied to the D ring), and my backup was my primary. Never had to deploy “in anger”, but still ran through the drill to demonstrate (something that I have rarely seen done with a “traditional” octo setup). Having been taught (BSAC) with a 1m octo, going to a long hose PD setup was a revelation in terms of use and hose management.
On a recent trip (while using a COVID safe config), I got a comment that “the octo hose is too long”, a comment that I really struggled to understand! Too short would definitely be a problem, but I can’t figure out a scenario where a 7′ hose would create an issue. Maybe it’s about time the longer hose became a standard, as I have found that even a 1.5m is more usable than the 90cm I had in training.
Hi Mark, you are right in the problem of having to remove the necklace IF the necklace is permanently attached. My sidemount regs are both necklaced in the same necklace that has two fisherman’s knots separated by a piece of plastic that comes on lanyards all the time. This can easily be donated because the necklace isn’t permanently attached. It’s just placed over the mouthpiece and tightened so that the regs don’t fall out on their own. But with a small tug, they’re free.
😎🌴👍🤿🇵🇭haven’t gone to a long hose primary donate yet but it seems to be growing on me and a smarter way of diving!
I finished my open water last year and we learned on primary donate. I just ordered my first set of regs in the long hose config and can’t wait to give them a shot! Definitely love to watch your videos as they are really informative and break things down well.
