Can I Use Dish Soap to Defog My Mask? #askmark
@391wombat
#askmark What about using dish soap as an anti-fog? I use it and it works great. Better than commercial versions I’ve used. Just a couple drops and I’ve never had any eye stinging. Just a quick rinse in the water, not in any tubs on board. Negligible environmental impact.

finally one diver to say why fog forms and dish soap works. water tension. excellent.
I prefer fresh organic spit, work perfect, just spit in your mask :D, no better defog than your own
Your spit actually contains harmful bacteria that post a risk for your eyes. I use it occasionally but it’s better not yo use it often.
Dawn Free & Clear might be what you were thinking about.
If the lens has been scrubbed clean recently, I would think all that’s needed is to rinse away particulates that droplets can stick to using whatever water is available (no spit needed). Worked for me so far but my dive spots haven’t been that varied yet.
Best wishes
Is it okay to use glass cleaner on the lenses? Just to remove the film.
I don’t know to be honest, I tend to stick to toothpaste and shampoo, they’re both readily available at home. I don’t know what’s in glass cleaners and how it may affect the components of a mask…
@Scuba Diver Magazine I am referring to the Tint Safe. No Ammonia
Stream2Sea Mask Defog won’t hurt your eyes or Kill the Fish 💙🐠
Baby shampoo , every time.
Its a non irritant
I use biodegradable dish soap. Just pure not diluted. Takes less than a pea size, rub it across the mask to cover everything, rinse and done. Never had an issue with stinging unless I used “too much”.
#askmark Hi I am in the process of buying my first set of dive kit. I have all the essentials, Mask, Fins, Wetuit, Computer… Just starting to think about Regulators and Transmitters but not looking to get a BCD yet. If i go on dive holidays how are most travel dive centers/ liveaboards about using the rental BCD LP hose on personal First stage, or attaching transmitter to rental set of Regs.. Thanks Evan
It’s not particularly hard to attach a transmitter. Some regulators only have a single high pressure port though so, I’d ask the dive centre beforehand to make sure that their rental regs can fit a transmitter. They may not want to remove their SPG to fit your transmitter.
The BCD hose is tricky, they probably won’t take a BCD hose off one of their regulators and fit it to your 1st stage. BCD hoses are pretty cheap and most rental BCDs will be a standard QD DIN fitting
#askmark Hi. Thank you for the content :awesom😂e job. Can you please cover the Full Face Mask and specially tips to reduce the air consumption. I like the field of view and other benefits but air consumption in FFM is still roughly 20% higher
Any advise/thought ?
Higher air consumption in a FFM can be caused by a poorly fitted mask and buildup of CO2 which makes your body want to breathe more frequently. Unless you have a positive pressure mask or a leak, your air consumption shouldn’t change that much switching between a traditional 2nd stage and a FFM.
Double check all of your seals, make sure there aren’t any leaks on the inside or outside of your mask. If the mask is new it could just be that your air consumption will come down naturally as you relax with the mask.
@Scuba Diver Magazine Thank you. May be you can do a clip about FFM at some point. Appreciate the answers . Always enjoy your programs. thank you for doing it
I bring baby shampoo. Not diluted. I dab a tiny drop on my finger and spread it on slightly wet lens and let it sit for some minutes. Wet it just before dive. And the same for bathing and shampooing after the dive.
#AskMark What is your opinion of diving without a snorkel especially in fresh water lakes and quarries.
I rarely dive with a snorkel in place TBH. They can be useful tools but, as long as I have air in my cylinder my regulator is more valuable to me and the snorkel just gets in the way
I have a BC2 and am wonderin how you remove the accesorry pockets? I assume you can use a screwdriver on the screws?
#AskMark
The little zippered pockets above the weight pockets? Yes, you should be able to remove those book screws fairly easily.
#askmark hey mark, could you do a Tutorial about trim? How the fins influence the trim. How to set up the bottle , trim weight and so on? Ive got the xdeep zen, and i am very head heavy😢 floating with the feets up to the surface.. its ridiculous…
It may be time for ankle weights or a new pair of fins. The buoyancy of your fins will make a difference. Many fins are made to be neutrally buoyant, or as close as they can get but, if you have neoprene down your legs that will float and the further you straighten your legs the more they’ll rotate you.
If you’re always in a face-down position then I’d want my lead as far down my body as possible, if there’s any lead up around your shoulders I’d move it down to your waist. You can attach some lead on a camband at the bottom of your cylinder. Scubapro has a new fin that you can attach small metal blocks to and adjust their buoyancy.
It’s a bit of experimentation and there are a lot of variables from how high your cylinder is mounted to how thick your wetsuit is…
@Scuba Diver Magazine Thank you! The tipp with lead at the bottom on the cylinder i will test thursday and give you a reply!
I also think about buying the rk3 fins.
My scubapro seawing nova are very positiv in buoanacy…
#askmark Hi Mark, how to prepare top class mask like Tusa Paragon? Should I also wash it thooth past or I can destroy the glasses. What to do?
TUSA recommend _”A toothpaste or a very mild abrasive liquid” “Although not likely, care should be taken when using these lenses as the coating could possibly be scratched or removed. The coating is on the outside of the mask lens, which allows cleaning and use of an anti-fog solution on the inside without issue. Take care to read the included care and maintenance information with each CrystalView AR/UV equipped mask.”_
I usually rub the toothpaste on and leave it for an hour or two before washing it off and repeating. Just get a small bottle of baby toothpaste or non-abrasive toothpaste that doesn’t have any granules
@Scuba Diver Magazine Thank you very much !!!
