Hey #askmark, did you know these guys have clips of you in their video??!! I’d prefer the real Mark videos, not them ripping you off! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgED0TTNaTs
I mis my traditional horse collar bcd. They are simple and easy to use and for some reason navys are still using them. Why are these so scarce these days? #AskMark
I think it mainly comes down to training. When students are learning to dive they’re often over-weighted and inflate the BCD. If you do that in a horse collar it can flip you over, which on the surface is a great thing.
By the time they qualify and learn to properly weight themselves they look at a horse collar and it’s so different to what they learnt to dive with they don’t consider it.
That lack of demand leads to a lack of supply. There are some out there though, they’re not the easiest to find and are often hidden behind the brands’ ‘professional’ side of their website.
Hi Mark…. good to see you back with your tips and tricks.
#AskMark what happened to the simply scuba
The short story is the company that owned Simply Scuba went into administration earlier this year.
The longer story is that during the 2020 lockdown Simply Scuba went into administration and the Internet Fusion Group bought the company and Simply Scuba continued to trade as part of IFG.
In April 2023, IFG went into administration and a company called Brand Alley bought IFG. But, it doesn’t look like Brand Alley are going to continue the Simply Scuba brand. It doesn’t seem to be their business model and it’s unclear what the future of Simply Scuba will be.
#AskMark. Good Afternoon, I have a question regarding masks. I am completely blind in 1 eye. I have been considering a FFM (specifically the #OceanReef Neptune 3). Do you feel I would have a better field of view (peripheral) than a standard low volume mask? I am interested in both warm and cold water diving. I have less than 20 dives and do understand the training required and the very high (very unfortunate) price tag.
Yes, FFMasks do have wide fields of view compared to half masks. And the Neptune III has side windows to expand your FOV. See if you can try a FFM on at your LDS. They’re a different way to dive but you get used to it.
Hi mark, great contento. On a DIR configuration-backplate AND wing- where do you recomnend the weightbelt, ontop of crotch strap or below, meaning to say first thing on or last thing on. Thanks #askmark
Good question! The current standard is to wear the weightbelt under the crotch strap. The main benefit is that your crotch strap can catch the weightbelt if it accidentally releases. If you ever need to ditch the lead and it does get caught on the crotch strap you can cut it free
#askmark How about some diving videos?
#askmark hello mark it’s me again 1st of all congrats on the move wish u all the best.
My question is about bcd lifts especially hybrid bcd’s or some call it back inflated bcd. What would be the minimum lift requirement for a single 12lit aluminum tank , 2kg back pocket weight , 6 kg belt or sls, accessories like DSMB, av seen ranges starting from 24lbs to 75 lbs.
sorry I know it’s a long question but I would u to explain thanks and have a good day.
I haven’t found a clear video so far or an explanation on what is the minimum lift capacity.
#askmark what are your thoughs on twinsets being mounted valves down?
pros and cons on both sides. I tend to stick with valves up for overall simplicity. Inverted does have it’s benefits but, for me upright ended up best.
Hello Mark, congrats on the new position. I’m interested in rebreathers, any suggestions?
Yeah, rebreathers will take over your life and bank account.
They are wonderful though. Spend some time looking around at the make and model that works for you and find a good Instructor.
Subscribed!… ….unsubbed simply scuba….
#AskMark Do you plan to create a podcast as you did with SimplyScuba?
Probably, I’ve only been here a few days so it will take a little time to work out the complete structure of what’s released each week but, I would like to keep the podcast going
@Scuba Diver Magazine great ! Thx
New channel, you need new haircut, new beard trim and new look!
I would like to #AskMark if he could explain the “durability” difference between standard and premium trilaminate drysuits. Specifically plastic zippers vs metal, sewn and taped vs sewn and glued seams, and “more durable” materials. Conventional wisdom is that metal, glued, and premium fabrics will last “longer” and be “more durable” but no one seems to be able to quantify these extremely subjective terms. Certainly not enough to justify what frequently is a 50% price difference. Thanks, you are a wealth of info and excited to see what you do at your new home!
#AskMark – I have a few Q. First reg. regulator. Somehow I like Mares very much due to quality of briething. My question is about the side channel or metal pipe in second stage, does it prevent from free flow a little bit? I am just to buy lots of goods for me and my wife and fighting between Mares Fusion or new Atlas …. or Aqualung Legend MBS. Second Q I would like to help my wife with under water position and think about Aqualung Axiom/Soul BCD. What do u think about them? Thank you.
Was subscribed before, but now I also “hit the bell”. Looking forward to your content!
I thought, what’s new about all this? Then I realised this is not Simply Scuba 😂
Great to see you! I all ready am a subscriber to this channel. Just wanted to say thanks for your scuba advice I have used to make many good decisions 👍
#askmark Hey Mark I have a pair of Tusa RS-790 regs (license made subapro Mk17/S550) and I love them but the second stage exhaust is extremely short, it doesn’t protrude out of the regulator at all and annoys the hell out of me with bubbles flying in my face all the time. Is there any way to fix this issue? Clip-on exhaust extenders (if that’s a thing)? 3D printing a custom exhaust guide? Getting exhaust guide from a different regulator and trying to squeeze it on? It’s not a safety critical piece of the regulator so I’m willing to experiment a bit because this has been annoying me a lot. Thanks!
A longer Exhaust Tee? Some regulators do offer longer Ts that you can swap over but, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a TUSA or ScubaPro…
The exhaust T does have an effect on your regulators performance and a lot of science and design goes into that little piece of plastic. I have to say that swapping it over will most likely void your warranty, some safety requirement paperwork probably and you do so at your own risk. That’s why it’s usually not recommended that your ‘customise’ your gear too much
No longer with simply scuba there lost . I was going to say hope you are going to improve the background. Any way congrats looking forward to you videos 👍
Good to see Bruce got the job as well…
Welcome Mark
Hi Mark – something on split fins versus solid please?
He said the s-word! Stones anyone? 😁 Honestly, that’s a topic a lot of people are a little too much emotionally involved.
Hasn’t this been done? Everyone knows split fins are only for people with injury or other medical condition
#askmark Could you explain current masks, ie UV lenses etc, what mask & lens would you recommend? also a good travel torch, dsmb, all essential travel gear, thanks
It’s good to see you again… Can’t wait
ah too bad I liked your channel but I won’t go with a dive mag. Sorry to see you go. Dive safe
Welcome… uhm… back… ;)
Hiiiiii mark. My sadness has lifted a little. Welcome to the “new gig!”
Hi Mark – I am getting ready to make the plunge and take the dive master class. Any tips or advice you can give me to be better prepared for the class? What is the purpose of exchanging all gear in the water?
Very cool Lisa,
I’ll talk more on Friday about the DM course but; the best thing to do is to simply go diving and gain confidence and experience. Try to help out as much as possible and accept any opportunity.
If somebody’s servicing a piece of equipment, ask if you can watch and learn how it works. And make sure that you’re approachable, if you’re happy and engaging then you’ll make a great DM.
Equipment exchange is all about planning, coordination and confidence. There are a lot of variables that you need to consider when taking off your gear and swapping for somebody else’s and you need to think about buoyancy changes…
Good luck Lisa!
Can I add ontop of Marks comment and this is personal opinion:
IF you have a prescription mask, get the other DMT or DM to use that first, basically start in the others gear, use the appropriate entry into the pool, then immediately I would swap mask ( if wearing prescription lenses ) as that’s what you’re most comfy in, or go straight for a BCD / Reg swap.
From memory there isn’t a time limit on the equipment exchange, but just double check, if there’s no time limit, take your time, remember to breathe, and relax, it’s not a race to get stuff done quickly, it’s about being safe.
If possible please do a review of Apeks DSX dive computer because I see it in online dive stores but nothing in apeks official website. So impossible to read the manual before purchasing one. I would even love a side by side comparison with a Perdix 2. #AskMark
It’s definitely on my to-do list as soon as I can.
Hi buddy
I am new to Scuba diving
I just got my opane water with BSAC
And I have to start to buy my first computer any recommendations
Many thanks
There are plenty available for you,
I, like a lot of the dive community, love shearwater dive computers. They have nice, easy to read and understand screens so, something like a Peregrine would be great if you’re just starting out.
Otherwise, you can’t go too far wrong. Even budget dive computers today are pretty good.
Have a chat with your diving group and see what they dive with. Work out which algorithm they use (it’s usually in the manufacturer’s description) and try to go for a similar computer so that your dive profiles will be similar in the water.
Good news and good to see you still online
Great news!
Great news. Congrats Mark.
Congratulations Mark!
I’ve got an #AskMark question if I may, I recently bought a m2m drysuit, and it comes with the KUBI system, the question I have is how do I go about equalizing the gloves as I haven’t been told? Could you do a demo possibly or an explanation video on how to do it?
Thanks Matt!
You basically need to break your cuff seal a little to allow some gas to travel from your sleeve into the glove.
I use a small silicone tube that came with one of my dry glove systems. But, all you need is something like the thumb loop from your undersuit, or just a piece of string tucked under your cuff seal to allow gas to flow through and lift your hand up when you need to relive the squeeze in your glove.
Just be aware that this also can let water into your suit if your glove is damaged or seal leaks.
@Scuba Diver Magazine fantastic Thankyou! That’s what I’ve been told, I’ll use the thumb loop from the artic and test it out!
Congratulations on the new job!
#askmark Hi Mark, i have recently moved from a standard BCD to backplate and wing, however i am finding it a bit of a faff when used in conjunction with my weight belt. if the weights are too far back, the backplate doesn’t sit flush on my back, and too far forwards and its uncomfortable on the hips etc. any advice/tips to make it more comfortable/efficient? ta, Lee.
Congratulations Mark
