I Wish I Knew This Before I Started My Scuba Diving Lessons

***** THANK YOU FOR WATCHING *****
Where did you learn to dive?
So I first learned how to dive in California. The average water temp is around 15C. 60 in F. So I don’t like freezing so I stopped diving in cali and just dove on vacation, mostly Hawaii but down in Mexico and some other places. It was good but I only got to dive maybe 10 to 20 times a year. About 7 years ago my friend learned how to dive and he talked me into going out on a live aboard here in California. I purchased a new semi dry wetsuit and off I went to freeze my ass off. I was so cold. Other divers thought I needed to stop diving because I was struggling so much. I’m not a quitter so I finished all the dives. That’s when I decided to get a drysuit. It makes the diving so much better and fun. I actually enjoy it now. I will say from personal experience that learning to dive in cold water does make you a much better diver and wish someone would have suggested a drysuit sooner. I could have done so many more dives over the last 20 years.
I can relate as a California diver, bottom temps in the 50 f range. Sorry no Celsius
I learnt in the UK, whereas my wife did her OW and AOW in Egypt. She loved it and has carried on. I hated it and haven’t dived since qualifying.
Sadly hear that all too often.
@Scuba Diver Magazine The annoying and irritating issue is that I would have probably enjoyed the diving if I had learnt in the beautiful Red Sea. My wife has admitted that she would have probably felt the same as I did if she had started out in the Uk on a cool, damp, dull day in June at Stoney cove. However I still have my cert card. You never know one day
Live in Wales. In 2018 had a long holiday in Australia and took PADI OW at dive centre in New South Wales coastal town. Back in Wales found a local centre and using quarry water at NDAC undertook AOW and other basic specialities inc Nitrox. End of 2019 had a two week live aboard in Red Sea diving rust and coral. Loads of fun and then planned to buy all kit in 2020 and buddy up with local dive club team members and do loads of boat and shore dives in UK waters. Then Covid struck 😭 OH unable to learn to dive for medical reasons and with her low immunity I had to stay well isolated to avoid catching then giving her Covid. It’s been a long two years on dry land. Will need refreshers by now.
Sorry to hear that, but you can always get back in the water – a quick refresher to get back in the groove and you’ll be back underwater.
