Hey guys I am Egyptian I was just diving in sharm last week it’s all fine to bring whatever camera you want
Well, if a diver’s GoPro was confiscated on arrival, that would really take the jam out of your doughnut, wouldn’t it?
It sounds like the ban has been lifted and they’re allowing cameras again. Still, best not to fight with officials in some places
Thanks for the heads up! How else would we learn the latest news? The Egyptians are paranoid beyond belief on any normal day. Have you ever had your passport checked NINE times before you can board your flight home?
This sort of event will throw them into an absolute frenzy. What’s vaguely amusing is the amount of effort they put in to achieve absolutely b*gger all! For example the $25 entry visa you buy at the airport. It’s just a sticker! $25 for a sticker! Just my opinion of course!
I have a few of those expensive stickers in my passport…
Apparently the ban has been lifted on dive boats already
First of all we’re not paranoid if you’re following our country’s news you’d know that we have been through violent terror attacks and we have all the right to take whatever actions to insure our guest’s safety. Sir you’re welcome anytime we’re doing our best to make you feel safe and welcomed so if you ever came here don’t you insult Egypt for being a ”delayed” country than yours. We’ve been through decades of occupation, wars and terrorism. we’re trying to keep up with you ASAP. Again we’re sorry for such precautions that may disturb your stay and you’re more than welcome anytime 😊.
@Ahmed Sukar Read carefully please. I had my passport checked NINE times while LEAVING your country. It was clear to me that this extended (and extreme) level of ‘security’ was more about providing jobs to the local inhabitants. Example: I’ve just had my passport checked, prior to X-ray of my luggage and 50 metres later (in sight of the X-ray check) there’s a fat Sergeant checking my passport AGAIN. We put up with it because it’s a requirement of Egyptian ‘security’… Maybe, I’ll dive Malta or Croatia where a single check is enough.
Do you understand…? We’re not terrorists, I’ve visited your country eight times before.. I’m a good guy. Stop punishing me!

Talking of underwater cameras, what’s the best for a budget of £5/600! Something better for photos than my GoPro.

Stupidity has no limits!
They’re not stupid, their security services are extremely thorough.They picked me up once on the basis of a text i’d sent to someone in Sharm. And they have to be very careful around there.i admit it seems like overkill,but the fact is images can be taken,shared online and then used by the wrong people for example.
What I mean by stupid is not knowing the difference between an action camera with a wide angle lens and a long telephoto. I doubt anyone could be spied on from a boat with a wide angle lens. “Security” is being used as a very large blanket these days because it can be. No offence intended.
Egypt is fucked up 🤦
None of it makes any sense, other than the elite “masters of the universe” not wanting to be seen by the masses, and governments such as Egypt being all too willing to pander to their wishes.
Let’s hope this gets sorted, I’m off to Sharm in a week or so. While I don’t have a massive rig, I was planning on taking my GoPro.
A diver who’s out there now told me that it’s all been lifted, especially for action-style cameras like GoPros
Do not go there….. there are other beter dive places on this beautifull Earth
Can I ask if you can recommend a dive centre in Sharm?
@Paul Tyler I usually use Pyramids, since they have an office/center at the hotel I usually go to. They’ve always been great.
@peter Warmerdam It’s local to where I’m currently living, the flights are cheap, and the flight there meets one of my contractual obligations.
