#AskMark can you get a dive computer that also monitors the inflation and possibly deflation of bcd to try and improve my weighting. im only a fair weather diver while on holiday but each time i dive i can be on the other side of the planet and buoyancy is all different comparing Caribbean and the very salty red sea. it takes me too long just guessing it was only on my 6th dive this year i perfected mine for a dive where i put in just barest push and did not have to again untill i broke the surface…my air last me 10mins longer…so anyone making a smart bcd. like a inserted 1kg lift at this depth and release .6kg of lift at this depth.

Should I Change My Regulator Hoses Every 5 Years? #askmark #scuba
@jeffmoye
Do Miflex hoses need to be replaced regularly? One service tech I spoke to said they need to be replaced every 5 yrs. can’t find anything on their website or brochure about it so I wonder if it’s obsolete news related to the rubber failure issue they used to have?

#askmark I’ve been watching plenty of your videos lately (including lots of older ones) and a common question I’d seen was if there was some way to get a single wing style that works for both single and double cylinder set-ups with the answer always being no with lots of good reasons you mention for why that is. However, it seems to me that with the main problem on a double-wing with a single cylinder being the “taco effect” has there not been a simple frame (like a baby backplate, if you will) that would fit to the inside of the wing to hold that inner part down with a single cylinder just as if you had 2 cylinders in there? Think of a butterfly set-up where the “wings” hold down the webbing on the inside of the double wing. Seems to me that might solve that problem or am I missing something? Thanks for all the great vids and advice!

I’m sure the manufactures have tried to design a universal wing before. Your design does sound plausible, make sure you get paid before your design gets stolen…

@Scuba Diver Magazine Lol! Let them steal away! It’s an idea I have no particular plans to try and execute. I am but a lowly computer geek, a systems engineer rather than a materials one, so that’s well out of my wheelhouse to do anyway. So if someone decides to take and patent it, more power to them, just let me know where I can buy it when they’re done ;)

#askmark Time to replace my dive computer. Currently using a Suunto Cobra. Looking to go to a wrist mount whilst keeping air integration, which sadly rules out the Shearwater Peregrine. In my budget range (~$800 USD) I have found the Aqualung i470TC and the Oceanic Geo Air, neither of which are on the shelf at any of my local dive shops for comparison. Have you used either of these computers? Is there anything that really sets one above the other? Are there other options in this range that I should consider instead?

They share some heritage so, they will be very similar. The main difference will be the Oceanic Dual Algorithm so you can pick and choose between DSAT or Pelagic Z+. It’s not a huge issue if you’re unlikely to dive with lots of different buddies who dive different algorithms. I don’t think I’ve played with either of these computers so, I can’t comment on their user interface unfortunately. But, if they’re similar to their predecessors they’ll be fine. Not my favourite menu structures but, they’re perfectly fine. Especially when you can connect them to your phone now to change all of the settings.

As far as other options, I’d also look at the Scubapro A2, that has a nice dot matrix screen and uses a Bühlmann algorithm. You can stick with Suunto with a D6i that runs the RGBM.

All four are strong choices. I’d look at the choices of transmitters and what they cost. And also see which algorithm your buddy dives with so you can be similar

@Scuba Diver Magazine Thank you Mark for the detailed response and the recommendations of other computers. Without real differences in operation, I’m going to opt for the Oceanic. I’ve been comparing the manuals for both computers and it seems that when the i470TC reaches the gas time remaining warning, it stops displaying no-deco time (or O2) time, and only displays the flashing GTR time. This seems to be the only functional difference to the two computers (aside from Dual Algorithm). The Geo Air displays the GTR time separately on the main screen, so you don’t lose your information on NDL time when there is a low gas warning.

Hi Mark, I’ve recently had my second hand cylinders inspected for the first time and was told they had some signs of surface rust and had to be cleaned, my question is what do they use to achieve this as I’ve noticed that my air now has a slightly medicinal taste to it! Is this normal? Dangerous? And will it go away after a few refills? Great videos by the way from all three channels that you’ve done! #askmark

Any taste is a red flag and should really be swapped out. Even after treating for rust, your cylinder should be cleaned and dried out, inspected again and then filled up so there shouldn’t be any residual traces. I’d take it back to the test centre before diving it again and check the air quality before leaving.

There are a few common treatments for rust on a steel cylinder and it depends on how the rust presents. Sand blasting, tumbling and chemical treatments.
They may have used a chemical treatment that hasn’t been washed out completely but, it’s best that they know and rectify the problem.

Hey Mark,

Love all your videos and unfortunately followed you here from Simply Scuba 😌😋

Quick question, what are you wearing in your right ear?! New Microphone?

Q
Why is there so much interagency friction in the UK. Also snobbery over kit, expensive kit is purchased over and to hide poor skills i.e GUE fanboys

It’s a strange issue that I see more and more in all walks of life. I’ve seen too much animosity to other divers just for what logo is on their cert card and it’s just ridiculous. I’ve actually had people turn their backs mid-conversation with one of my buddies because they were a certain training agency…

I got a 5mm wetsuit, on my first few dives, when I just get my OWD i used 8kg lead in saltwater, but I found it much more comfortable to use 6kg and 4kg in freshwater.

It’s now a little bit more difficult to sink but during my dive I could keep my bcd empty, depence how deep I’m. Before, I had 6kg, when I dove in Lake Zurich I feel like sinking when I reached 8 or 10 m, so I always had to add air. I prefer less weight but still being a little bit more negativ buoyant, the reason is I got a quite large lung so I just need to breathe a little bit more in.

So I would recommend +2kg for saltwater.

i always wish there was an air pressure gauge to know how much air is in the bcd. is my bcd overinflated/underinflated especially at the end of the dive.

The pressure inside the bcd is the same as the ambient pressure of the water around you. Unless the bcd is completed full and overexpanding…

@Thiione by pressure i mean the air in your bcd. for example when you try and exhaust the air thru the shoulder dump valve if you’re not in the upright position all of the air in the bcd may not be exhausted. it would help in weighting to know all of the air is exhausted.

Thiione

@DTT The water pressure around you presses on the bladder of the bcd, so the air inside the bcd has the same pressure as the ambiet pressure, no matter how much air is in the bcd, unfortunately.
