#ASKMARK Hello Mark, while out diving recently I talked to an experienced diver who was diving with twins but did not have any manifold on them, i.e. each cylinder had a first stage with a primary and an SPG. One cylinder had the low pressure inflator for his BC. What are the pros and cons of a manifold setup versus independent twins?

I have unfortunately tried everything to equalize but I just can’t. I would then get sore ears and also a nose bleed. Gutted as I really miss scuba :(

Bad luck, it’s rubbish when you see a student come to accept that they may not be able to scuba dive because they can’t equalize

How often do you equalise during decent?

Question, i had tubes put in my ears when i was a kid, does that affect anything.

We’re not medically trained but I would at a guess say yes. Speak with DAN or a similar medical body to get a professional answer.

Ear tubes usually fall out on their own after a couple of years. The next time you are at your doctor’s office, ask them to look- chances are they aren’t there anymore. If so, they would prevent the need for clearing your ears (bonus!). In fact, when people are undergoing hyperbaric treatment, they often have a doctor insert these tubes to prevent the pain in your ears whilst under pressure.

Anyone have a problem after a dive with a feeling of water in the ear, and losing most of their hearing in that ear? This happened to me a couple of days ago, and my hearing still hasn’t returned in my left ear. I can hear a little sound, but it sounds far away. It was a shallow dive (4.5 metres max) and I had no problem equalizing. There has been no pain, just a slight feeling of pressure. I went to the doctor, who gave me some eardrops to use for a week. He thought that wax probably got pushed back into my ear, but he did see a little blood. He said he didn’t think it would be serious or permanent but couldn’t be sure yet. he gave me some drops to use and I’m supposed to see him next week. But I thought I’d ask if this was something other people have gone through. I’m pretty nervous, and praying that this doesn’t end my diving. Because If my hearing doesn’t come back in that ear, I’m not going to risk having something happen to my other ear. 😟

Scuba Diver Magazine Thanks! While I didn’t have any of the equilibrium problems the person in the example had, it does sound very much like what probably happened. Praying there isn’t any kind of a permanent damage, and I will make sure to clean and prep my ears before diving. Great timing on this video.

@Alex 100% better. The drops the doctor gave me did the trick. Took about a week but I’m just glad it wasn’t barotrauma. Still kind of scary for a little while though.
