The comment about mixing 1st and 2nd stage brands is typically nonsense. Mares 1st and primary, with US Divers octo for 30 years. No problems.

#askmark. What are the technical reasons that brands cannot be mixed? What problems could occur when using another brand octo?

It mainly comes down to getting it set up and getting them serviced. Most regulators work in a very similar way but some use a slightly higher or lower ISP and they may need a little more adjusting when you put them together.
When it’s time for a service, if it’s the same brand then the service centre can service all of the parts but if they don’t carry the 2nd brand it gets tricky.

How about a comprehensive comparison between piston and membrane 1st stage regulators, showing how they work, and pros and cons for each. #askmark
