Hey! My father recently purchased a shearwater computer, and I was thinking about getting one for myself. What is the range on these transmitters? I would like to track my father’s air and my air own on my dive computer.
While listening to Mark, I was trying to add up the value proposition, so I don’t need to check my air consumption all that often, (but I still will as it is muscle memory) and I’ll get a ‘Time to Live” on my air consumption.. that’s nice, but we do a pretty good job of managing that as well… So with the additional gear failure potential, (Greg Lyon below) I really don’t see the value… Am I missing something ?
6 inch HP hose is a must if you don’t want run into problems.

@Greg Lyon transmitter makes a nice handle when it attached directly to 1st stage. Too bad it can’t handle the load. 🤣 And usually when it breaks, the threads stays in 1st stage
@scubadivermagazine and divers: I dive with a teric and swift transmitter. Just two weeks ago when turning on my cylinder the over-pressure emergency release pin on the transmitter blew, air flowing out at high pressure etc. Fortunately I dive fully redundant with an hp hose ai dive computer, so I was able to remove the transmitter from my first stage, plug the hp port, and proceed with my two boat dives for the day. If I didn’t have redundancy my day of diving would have been over. Secondly, if it had blown while submerged, without a hose back up computer I would have lost the ability to check psi. Thus, I’d say, at the least, dive with a back up spg at all times. Shearwater was great, replaced the transmitter, told me it was no fault of mine, and that these incidents don’t happen often, but that they are not uncommon, sometimes it just malfunctions. So my experience; dive with back up hose spg or full computer always.

#askmark. Mark whats the “rule” now? If you have an AI computer and transmitter can you get rid of your analog spg hose or is it still strongly recommended to keep it? Technology is pretty reliable now. What do most AI divers do?

I’ve dove with a transmitter for almost 20 years now, and have always had a backup SPG. I get wanting to streamline and simplify as much as possible, but it’s really not that big a deal to me to have a tiny little glass SPG bolt snapped to my left waist D ring in case I ever need it. I only have a hose on it that’s just long enough to get it where it needs to be, so it’s pretty streamlined. I have had a few dives in the past where the transmitter didn’t sync for whatever reason, and without an SPG I would have had to abort the dive which is no fun on a trip.
But don’t spg’s and/or their hoses fail too? Anyone know the failure rate of transmitters vs spg’s? Seems to me thats the question. No one seems to question just using an spg without redundancy, only an AI computer/transmitter w/o also using an spg.
@391wombat The failure rate of the transmitter is going to be higher than any analog gauge because electronics are involved, which is why some people like to have an analog backup which isn’t dependent on batteries and your dive computer and whatnot. High pressure hoses should essentially never fail if properly maintained. There’s very little to go wrong between your first stage and some hose and an analog gauge, compared to something like a regulator where the second stage has a bunch of moving parts (which is why you have a secondary).
That said, yes there’s a lot of folks out there nowadays who are fine diving with just a transmitter/computer and no analog SPG. Both are valid approaches; just do what you’re personally comfortable with. Assuming the whatever you choose that you properly maintain and configure your gear, you should be fine.

You didn’t go into details to which other brands work with the Swift AI. Is it compatible with all of the other Pelagic Pressure compatible computer/transmitter systems (Aqualung, Hollis/Oceanic/Huish)? There may be other brands, but I don’t know which are compatible.
