#askmark Hi Mark, would you consider cavern diving as recreational or technical diving? Interesingly PADI offers the cavern diving course as a rec specialty, and SSI as tech (part of extended range). Normally PADI and SSI courses are interchangeable; but would this still be the case for cavern diving? Also, could it be that a DC does not accept PADI for cavern diving because they qualify it as tech? Lastly, do you have experience with cavern diving? Any stories to share:) Thanks for your thoughts!

Hey Mark,
I have a question about a specific drysuit. What can you say about Seal drysuit, by xdeep, or can you do a review? I looked and there were only a few forum reviews… Thank you in advance!
Keep up with your excellent work :)

What do you think of dive lights with a push-button switch vs dive lights with a mechanical head rotary switch? Is the head rotary switch more reliable? I'm in doubt between an orcatorch D700 and D710.

@Cale Queen
#askmark I just did a charter dive and we went to 85 feet. My computer Aqualung 200 signaled for a deep stop but the dive master said that deep stops are actually more dangerous. I cannot find a definitive answer. What are your thoughts?

@Dale Richardson
#Askmark Hi Mark, love the videos, really look forward to them, I am thinking of upgrading my dive computer from the Suunto Zoop Novo.y budget is around £600 and would want air integration, what would you recommend as the best in this price range ? Many thanks Dale

#ASKMARK Hello Mark, while out diving recently I talked to an experienced diver who was diving with twins but did not have any manifold on them, i.e. each cylinder had a first stage with a primary and an SPG. One cylinder had the low pressure inflator for his BC. What are the pros and cons of a manifold setup versus independent twins?

Hi Mark, I just finished a deco course with Mark Powell. You’re right that deep stops in general are pretty much discredited. Surprisingly for relatively shallow rec dives esearch has shown there’s a small benefit to doing a short deepish stop. The benefit is not huge and there’s not enough experimental data to give a clear recommendation on which depth and how long so probably not worth doing for rec dives.
For deeper dives skip them too. You’ll get real benefit from good hydration, staying warm in the ascent and doing the last part of the ascent very slowly.

I heartily recommend Mark Powell’s course Deco for Divers. The book is great but the webinar course with him helped me really understand deco.

I’m wondering if the diver exceeded their NDL on that dive and that’s why the computer recommended doing a deep stop. If that’s the case, is NOT doing a deep stop still recommended?

It is probably possible to turn off deep stops on the i200. My i450t has that option

Hi Mark,
I just saw your video about diving with seals. As you said diving with seals is on the bucket list for many divers so do on mine.
I would like to ask what place (in the UK or EU) would you recommende to visit & what time of year is the best bet to encounter those adolescent seals?
Thanks for all the great videos! #AskMark

The Farne Islands on the North East coast of the UK is the best place I’ve been to dive with seals. We usually go September-October time for the best experience.

@Scuba Diver Magazine Thanks a lot 🙏! In the meantime I found out about Farne Islands, but the time of year haven’t, so I’m really grateful for the answer 😊.

#AskMark, Hi! Where do i find bolts for twin-set backplate that is long enough? I need 140mm long bolts for Xdeep project backplate and with my used twins there were one 110mm and one 130mm long bolt. No luck in hardware stores. Do I need to buy threaded rods and cut them? Thank you for your help!

Around 2010 ish the US Navy tested pile stops and found that deep stops don’t work.

#ask mark Hello Mark my question is about getting into service of and setting of diving regulators by the many manufacturers out on the market. I have extensive experience on high pressure and oxygen. And would love and enjoy to get into this field. What is your thoughts. Also enjoy your videos on diving thanks. Joe 👍😎🤿

Yeah, it depends on where you’re located though. Some countries, as long as you can get hold of the service kits and tools, you can service regs. But, here in the UK for example, you have to work for a dealer of that brand and complete a servicing technician course for that brand. I’d also look at some kind of insurance to cover you should something happen to a diver for a set of regulators that you’ve serviced.

@askmark hi Marc, love the videos, big fan! I had a couple of questions regarding traveling abroad by plane. What are the regulations of bringing a dive knive? Seeing it is a ‘weapon’, it might get confiscated by customs or airport security. Also where do you store your batteries and electronics (dive computer, torch, etc) main luggage or hand luggage. Many thanks and season greetings Kenneth

This you’ll need to check where you’re going each time just to be sure. But, normally as long as you have a bag full of dive gear authorities will see it as ‘Dive Gear’. If you just have your dive knife in a bag it will be a lot harder to explain and it would have to be checked in.

For batteries, again, it’s best to check each time but I think carry on is preferred today with rechargeables.

So the premise to the 1st question is wrong. Cavern for SSI is not part of XR. I recently took cavern, wreck, advanced wreck, and rec deco SSI courses. Only the advanced wreck C card shows up in my app under Extended Range.

Gozo (the island next to Malta in the Mediterranean) is a great place for cavern diving and some very manageable caves. It can be easily done by rec divers and may be a good start to go on in that direction.

Or look for a used Perdix AI with an Aqualung or Oceanic transmitter. They should be around the £600 mark. With the Perdix 2 out now, people may be looking to upgrade and sell their older stuff which is still top tier.
