#ASKMARK… Is there a best practice timeframe to work with; in order to have your dive gear, ie. 1st & 2nd stage hoses/connectors & tanks technician checked and serviced to ensure dive safety over X?? number of dives or a given timeframe, regardless of the number of dives? 🤿🇦🇺👍
It varies between manufacturer and model but, most recommend a service every 1 year or 100 dives, whichever comes first with normal use.
Some extend that up to 3 years or 300 dives like the Atomic T3. You’ll find the servicing schedule in your regulator user manual.
Hi Mark
First I world like to thank you for that what you do.
I have question about weight in twinset.
Most of the twinset divers are using only weight attached to cylinders. That is much more comfortable, but is impossible to drop any ballast on event of emengersy situation. Is it just because DIR is giving us redundancy of two separated buoyancy control systems, so we can easier dealing with that kind of problems? Or we should have possibility to drop couple of kilograms? What is your opinion? What system you are using for your double? Many thanks. #ASKMARK
Regards
Dariusz
I always carry some weight on a traditional weightbelt that I can drop if I need to.
I carry 5kg in a V-Weight between my twins and then everything else is on a traditional weightbelt
@Scuba Diver Magazine thanks Mark.
👍😎🤿
#askmark How did those cool old timey two-hose regulators work? They look like a rebreather loop so maybe one-way valves? And why were they used?
Yeah, you’re right. One-way valves to control airflow just like a rebreather loop. The design was simply to create a demand valve that attaches to the cylinder that combines 1st and 2nd stage functions into one unit. It was only years later when engineers considered creating a separate 1st and 2nd stage like we know today.
Check out Alec Peirce, he’s the man to show you some double hose regulators

I found out very quickly that “standard” hoses are #floppyshanghazard in most cases.
I started with standard setup as baseline , and end up changing every hose to fit properly.
Trial and error. Welcome to building a complete save a dive back up kit!😅 I searched for standard length hoses for left side on sidemount. Got an answer of 24-30 inches. Ordered that only to figure out I’m much taller and with broader shoulders than others. Sidemount is very fitted to you and your body, I ended up having to buy a 34 inch hose to make it fit without yanking my mouth
But now I have a perfectly good 30 inch hose as backup should one ever need replacing
For sidmount, it’s even more important to get your drysuit and BC hose correctly sized. They create the needed tension to keep the cylinders close to your body.
#ASKMARK How far down from the shoulder should your LPI hang to be optimal ?
It’s really up to you. Too long and they can have a mind of their own and end up caught behind your shoulder if you don’t use a retainer. They can also create a U-Bend that prevents air from escaping. Longer hoses are usually reserved for BCDs that need to route around your body such as sidemount BCDs and BCDs with a central mounting point so the hose needs to route further to reach over your shoulder.
some divers prefer shorter hoses, others longer hoses. As long as you can reach it to orally inflate and you can raise it high enough to dump gas then it’s a good length for you. Try reaching for where you would normally grab for your inflator and measure from there.
