Which Masks Have the Best View? #AskMark #scuba @scubadivermag

@douglaw99
#askmark
Looking for a new mask with a larger field of view, preferably single lens. I’m currently diving VX1 and the lens is starting to feel small. I’m looking at the TUSA Zensee but wondering if the Paragon S also offers a large view?
Thanks, Doug

Should I Change My Regulator Hoses Every 5 Years? #askmark #scuba
@jeffmoye
Do Miflex hoses need to be replaced regularly? One service tech I spoke to said they need to be replaced every 5 yrs. can’t find anything on their website or brochure about it so I wonder if it’s obsolete news related to the rubber failure issue they used to have?

Hi Mark . I’m pretty new to diving. When I did my open water course I was able to use a bifocal mask. I’m looking to purchase one for myself. Any suggestions on a particular make? Much appreciated

It really depends on your prescription. I’d look at some TUSA masks like the Ceos and Geminus. With those masks you can swap the lenses with some off-the-shelf prescription lenses that are a high quality choice but, only if your prescription isn’t too complicated.
Otherwise there are some companies such as Axis Optical, who can make lenses to your prescription and mask shape. It’s custom for you but, much more expensive

Are the frameless mask better for people with mustaches? Thank you

Tusa Freedom HD 👀

I presume it would be wise to buy 2 x selected wider FOV knowing the 2nd is an identical ‘reserve’ mask, especially if your chosen in-use mask is damaged or possibly lost beyond maximum safe diving limits…IMO😊

FOV is not as simple as just by looking at the size of the mask. bigger mask doesn’t always = better FOV. there are 2 main factors which will affect the FOV.
1, the size of the lens/frame.
2, the distance between the eyes and the lens.
on top of that, it also have to fit your face.
imagine your self looking through a window, the bigger the window the less distance you need from the window to see more. and vice versa.
I use to wear a Tusa HD mask. it’s pretty big and bulky, it’s got a really big lens. But because the design of the mask, even it’s got a big lens but the FOV is still limited.
diffrent face shape wearing a same mask would result a diffrent FOV.
without considering the fit, the rule of thumb is the bigger the lens, the better the FOV. the closer the lens to the eyes, the better the FOV.
so it’s difficult to recomend a mask to anyone without that person actually trying it and comparing to other masks.
the best way to find the best mask for you is to go to a really big LDS, and try all of masks avalible.

#askmark could you explain or let divers know how air moves in the bcd. I figured it out after ascending to the surface from 60 feet. Go vertical or point your shoulder. I never thought about it. It was never told about it.

Sure, air simply always wants to go to the highest point but, in some BCD designs air can get trapped in some corners.

Most BCDs are designed so that the valves are at the highest point when you’re horizontal in the water. But, if you have a trapped air pocket then pointing your knees down and stretching your left shoulder up should direct any air to that corrugated house.

There’s actually a funny story where an Apeks Sidemount BCD failed it’s test because in the official test the BCD is tested upright. However sidemount BCDs don’t have an upper valve so they had to place a valve there just to pass this test.

I think you mentioned an upcoming video about downcurrents. Is that still coming? We were in Cozumel recently when there was a downcurrent tragedy. Would be very interested in your thoughts. Thanks. #AskMark.

#AskMark Hi Mark, I’m hoping to learn to dive this year, how fit do you need to be. I’m using it as motivation to hopefully loose a few kilos. Thanks

That’s cool, and a great question! You don’t need to be super fit to learn how to scuba dive but, there are some health considerations.

When you sign up for your course you’ll fill out a _self assessment questionnaire_ to make sure that you don’t have any conditions that a doctor would need to sign off before you begin. And at the beginning of your water sessions there are a couple of swimming tests but, they’re not timed. Typically: swim 200m, rest, tread water for 10mins.

Scuba diving is a fairly chilled out hobby but, it is important that you look after your heart. Have a chat with your local dive centre and they’ll go through any doubts you may have

@Scuba Diver Magazine Thanks for the reply Mark. Should have mentioned I was Type 2 Diabetic. Off for a chat with my local BSAC club next week. Fingers crossed

I’d like to add XDeep’s Radical mask to the equation. Superbly designed, and has superb FOV. Very soft silicon. Quality through and through…

I could well imagine that the Beuchat Super Comensator has a very good FOV.
