Hi Mark! Great video as always… For a future video could you please clarify the way to use the cylinder valve. I was taught on my open water course that the cylinder should be opened fully and then turned back a half turn. I've since learned that the cylinder valve should be opened fully without turning it back (DAN website). Diving recently in Egypt everyone was still turning the valves back a half turn. Could you clarify which technique is correct and tell us why please. Thanks in advance.

#AskMark You mentioned “former instructor”? Why don’t you teach anymore?

#askmark. What are the technical reasons that brands cannot be mixed? What problems could occur when using another brand octo?

Ask Mark : what is your opinion of Kraken double hose regulator? I have not dove with a double hose regulator since the 60’s. It appears the Kraken has overcome the shortcomings of the earlier double hose regulators.

#AskMark How long should I wait before investing in a BCD and Kit? I am going on my 20th dive soon and will be getting my advanced open water cert but I am still unfamiliar with so many different styles of gear it's hard to know if I should just keep with what my dive shop rents to me.

#askmark what’s your thoughts on the whole clean air nitrox andi. Seems like a scam

#ASKMARK Hello Mark, while out diving recently I talked to an experienced diver who was diving with twins but did not have any manifold on them, i.e. each cylinder had a first stage with a primary and an SPG. One cylinder had the low pressure inflator for his BC. What are the pros and cons of a manifold setup versus independent twins?

The reason for the valve qtr turn back, was back in the day, if you checked the valve and it wasn’t seated it was open, if it was tight it was shut, this prevented accidents by opening the valve of a high pressure bottle, which in certain circumstances could cause a diesel (explosion) effect. Modern gas bottles have a smoother open action, which in most scenarios negates a dieseling effect. HTH 😊

Brand Mix issues – This I experienced in 1970 doing a tank exchange in my NASDS Open Water program. I had a tank with a US Divers valve and a Scubapro Mk VI – Pneumatic yoke (spring) which requires a couple minutes to fit on. Great video on regulator variances, Mark.

As for buying dove gear I’d recommend talking to instructors and people who are doing the type of diving you want to grow into. Some private instructors you may find are also dealers and some will give you better deals on gear than in a traditional dive shop.

#askmark Hi Mark, big fan been following you for years from Simply Scuba :) I’m looking to build a long hose setup and currently use XTX 50’s and DST, is it worth upgrading to the XTX 200 and purchasing 5 port DST and pass my 50’s down to my newly qualified partner? Thanks a lot, Corley!

#askmark heard from an LDS here in Texas that I need to sell my APEKs kit as APEKs has gone into receivership and we can no longer get APEKs regs serviced locally. Sounds suspicious but any insight on whats happening with APEK’s? I have sunk a lot of money in BP/W, regs (sidemount) etc on APEKs….. Should I be worried???

I don’t think there’s any truth behind that, they’ve just made a huge commitment to their production facility here in the UK and they’re backed by a large global investment group. Probably just the rumor mill making up stories

#askmark Hi Mark, I would like ask you for your opinion about Technical courses / diving. I’m Rescue Diver / Deep / Nitrox diver with over 120 dives mostly in drysuit (quarries, oceans and seas) and I’m thinking about step in to technical diving. Would you be able share your thoughts about Padi Tech40 vs SSI Decompression Diver. Both are max 40m however with SSI I don’t need to change all equipment yet and stage bottle always will be useful in the future. sorry for long question and thanks for videos, they very useful

#askmark what is you favourite style of boltsnap? And if Scuba Diver Mag gave you a budget to redesign one what would it look like? Thank you for these amazing videos… longtime fan first time comment(on askmark).

The perfect Boltsnap? If money were no object then it would probably be titanium with a large gate and trigger and a section down the body with stippling effect for grip.
Or just bling it out with gold as gold doesn’t rust but it would make it heavy and you’d cry if you drop it…

#askmark Hey Mark, great stuff in all your videos, thanks for them! I have a debate with my buddies about a specific danger of regulator failures. Not the stop-of-airflow side (it is obvious) but the other end of the spectrum – overblowing our breathing system.. Some say technically it is possible to get in a life-threatening situation in case a first stage fails in a specific way (probably combined with second stage failure at the same time), while others say it is technically impossible to get a dangerous pressure in your mouth (and way forward). Where is the truth?

#askMark hello Mark, I just became open water certified and was wondering if there was recommended waiting period before going to advanced open water or nitrox?

Mark I recently bought a Halcyon H-75p Single cilinder pakage, I use to dive recreationaly, I dive once a month. At the first use it work pretty well. In my second dive when I was testing my second stage the air didnt flow… I try to push air but it seems that the valve was stuck, I had to blow pretty hard to the valve back to work. Is this normal ? it happen again in my third dive … Maybe im cleanning or storaging my regulaters wrongly I really dont know, I always dry the cap before the dives and protect the first stage, I always rinse tham and let tham dry hang. Can you help me ? #askmark #scuba #Q&A | @Scuba Diver Magazine

I recently replaced the HP hose supplied with my Cressi console 2 with a Miflex hose. I notice that the hole on the Cressi has a pin prick hole but the Miflex does not. Should I be concerned at all?

#askmark Hey Mark, I have 2 questions. What is the most stremline, minimalist BC for sidemount now on the market? And What would sugest for a cold water (8°C), Wetsuit or Drysuit, and which model? I usually use 5mm Wetsuit with water’s around 22°C.
Thanks a lot.

With 8°C water temperatura, drysuit for sure. I personally dive with a semidry on 23°C water but 8 is so so cold for any wetsuit I’d say jajajaja

I can honestly say that when I was certified in the late 70’s nitrox was never talked about. Like you said oxygen was considered toxic.

#askmark hi Mark. Love your videos always great information. I have always been a recreational diver so my setup is traditional regulator and octo. What is your thoughts on long hose configuration even though I don’t use backplate and wing but back inflate BCD.
