Hey Marcel I just wanted to say thank you for the informative videos! I’m not at instructor level (not sure if I want to go that high, I’ll rethink that after I get to divemaster) but I do health and safety as a profession, and I thought you bring up very valid points. I really agree about thinking ahead, and the foresight to question what may happen with regards to the coral inside the caves, and the realistic reaction of a student losing control of their buoyancy and hitting the ceiling of the cave.
The only thing I would add is that as an instructor, your students will copy you. Over the 3 days or so of your teaching, they will observe your habits and will use those as a point of reference in the future. Also, by watching the instructor fail to correct an issue with the student or another diver, it almost make them accept it as normal.
My wife’s OW instructor took her inside a wreck on her course.. She wasn’t comfortable at all with it and questioned it after her dive. I was shocked and assured her that was not supposed to happen.
Hi L M, I 100% agree with how much your students copy you! What a lot of instructors don’t realise is that students not always copy their bad behaviour during the course, but even worse after certification without their supervision. This is the reason why so many bad instructors get away with their behaviour.
In your wife’s case it is a classic story, which is not allowed. I can’t count the amount of times I heard and seen instructor’s taking Open Water students inside wrecks. Most instructors don’t even know that is is wrong to take ow students in wrecks. (say’s a lot about their training also).
You got the right attitude L M! Maybe it is time for your Instructor course…
@Marcel van den Berg yep I’ll get there eventually. If I want to own a dive shop, it would be in my best professional interest to become an instructor even if I don’t have any ambition to teach. 2022 will be DM and we will see where it goes from there! My goal is to find an instructor that aligns with my personal beliefs about safety and skills, which is difficult research. Don’t worry, I’ve subscribed to your videos and will definitely keep you in mind, especially if I venture back to Koh Tao 👍
