A revered section of pristine coral reef in the diving paradise of Raja Ampat has been badly damaged after a 90-metre-long cruise ship ran aground at the weekend.

The MV Caledonian Sky, which was carrying 102 passengers at the time, ploughed into the reef, near Kri, on Saturday afternoon and while it managed to free itself after a relatively short period of time, the damage was done, with a 20-metre-long cut in the coral being left in its wake.

The incident is being investigated by the local authorities.
