The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has appointed a new Chief Executive. Environmental lawyer Sandy Luk replaces Samantha Fanshawe, who stepped down in June after 11 years heading the UK charity.
Luk has been Director of Programmes at environmental law firm ClientEarth for the past six years, and is set to move to the MCS in October.
Experienced in marine and fisheries issues, she had previously worked with the charity for some years on issues such as environmental information access, sustainable seafood, and protection of designated UK marine sites.
“The ocean brings so much value to all our lives, from oxygen to food to wonderful sea life and from livelihoods to pure enjoyment,” said Luk. “The Marine Conservation Society deeply understands this. It uses science and works with people to protect and inspire in equal measure.
“I feel immensely privileged, thrilled and excited to be entrusted with leading the Marine Conservation Society to achieve its vision of restoration of the sea’s rich wildlife, more plentiful fish stocks, and cleaner beaches and sea water.”
MCS provides information and guidance on many aspects of marine conservation and produces the annual Good Beach Guide and the Good Fish Guide as well as involving thousands of volunteers in projects and surveys such as the Great British Beach Clean.
