The final phase of underwater sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor’s monumental artificial-reef project Museo Atlantico in the Canary islands is officially inaugurated today (10 January) by Lanzarote’s President Pedro San Gines.
Comprising more than 300 works in 12 installations at Playa Blanco, completion of the project marks the first time Taylor has installed large-scale architectural as well as sculptural works.
Divers are encouraged to spend time in the underwater museum, which includes installations such as “Crossing the Rubicon” – 35 figures walking towards a 30m-long, 100-tonne underwater wall and entrance, described as “a boundary between two realities and a portal to the Atlantic Ocean”.
“Deregulated” is a children’s playground enjoyed by suited businessmen, while “The Portal” depicts a hybrid animal/human sculpture looking into a large square mirror that reflects the moving surface of the ocean.
The final addition is “The Human Gyre”, consisting of more than 200 life-size figures of all ages and from all walks of life creating a vast circular formation.
“A visit to Museo Atlantico may lead us to a closer understanding of our relationship with the natural marine environment and appreciate the need to value and protect this fragile eco-system in order to save ourselves,” says deCaires Taylor.
