A new British-run dive centre on Spain’s Costa Calida is set to get some valuable free publicity – as a result of TV exposure on Channel 4.
Scuba Murcia was set up in La Manga Del Mar Menor last spring, and the story of its first steps is featured daily from next Monday (26 February) in four one-hour episodes of the TV series A New Life In The Sun.
The programmes follow a range of expatriates “chasing their dream lives abroad”, and in the case of Scuba Murcia viewers will see “the journey we had from setting up, a few obstacles on the way and the diving experiences we had in our first season of opening”, owner Ed Smith told Divernet.
Smith ran a dive-centre in the UK for eight years but he and his partner Jo decided to move to Spain to set up the centre and get “a bit of a change of lifestyle, warm water, sunshine and a different pace of life”.
After being approached by the TV production company, the couple were assigned a cameraman to shadow them over a six-month period, “documenting everything we did from building the shop, meeting with local authorities, taking our first customers diving and filming the awesome marine park and wreck-dives in our area – the reason we chose Murcia!”
The daytime programmes go out at 4pm so some time-shifting or catch-up might be required, but as Ed Smith says: “It’s a great opportunity to shout about diving as a whole on the telly!”
