A 62-year-old diver has died after getting into difficulties off the Berwickshire coast, just north of St Abbs Head.
The St Abbs independent lifeboat was called by the Coastguard at around 10.30am on Saturday (25 November), following reports that a diver had become separated from his group and was in distress.
Two of the lifeboat crew went aboard an Eyemouth dive-boat, where they administered first aid and defibrillation to the diver until a Coastguard rescue helicopter arrived.
The man was airlifted to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he later died.
The lifeboat crew later treated another of the divers for shock back at the station but then, because of what they described as “some confusion” about the number of divers retrieved from the water, they returned to the scene to search the area with the two Eyemouth RNLI lifeboats.
After about half an hour it was confirmed that all divers from the boat had been accounted for.
The police have stated that there were no suspicious circumstances, and that a report would be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
