Divers Alert Network (DAN), the dive industry’s safety organization and professional liability insurance provider, has launched Continuing Education for Dive Professionals – Course 3: Barotrauma Legal Drama. This new, free course is now available through DAN E-Learning.
Barotrauma Legal Drama follows a fictional ear barotrauma incident from open water training through a legal deposition, showing how an instructor’s decisions and documentation could be scrutinized in a lawsuit. The course combines a cinematic narrative with commentary from DAN’s safety and legal experts.

To encourage participation, DAN is offering discounted premiums on individual professional liability and group professional liability insurance to DAN members who complete the free e-learning.* Members who complete the course are eligible to receive a discount of approximately 5% on their annual liability policy; this is in addition to the 5% discount that DAN members already receive.

Since its launch in 2024, DAN’s Continuing Education for Dive Professionals program has helped enhance safety and reduce dive operators’ liability risk, with more than 19,000 course completions. This newly released third course, Barotrauma Legal Drama, encourages dive professionals to promote safe practices and make decisions that protect both their divers and their careers.
If you have any professional liability insurance questions, or need assistance, contact DAN at liabilityinsurance@dan.org.
* If you are on a group professional liability policy, completing the e-learning may count toward a discount on the group professional liability premium. However, the requirements must be finalized prior to policy renewal: staff must hold an active DAN membership and complete the e-learning before they are listed on the group policy. Refunds will not be issued to professionals who renew their policy and then take the course.
