A 59-year-old tourist from North Carolina died while on a scuba-diving boat-trip off the Caribbean island of Antigua on the afternoon of 8 June.

According to local reports the man had been diving in the vicinity of the small Rabbit and Red Head islands off the north-east coast when he became unresponsive at around 3.15pm.

Paramedics were at the scene as the diver was brought back to Shell Beach Marina near Antigua’s international airport. He was then transferred by road to the inland Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre but was pronounced dead on arrival at 4.36pm.

The man had been three days into a week-long holiday with relatives. Police have launched an investigation and a post mortem examination was being carried out, but the circumstances and cause of death have not been released.
