As from 20 June, Malta is introducing a new Eco Tax for visitors to the island.
A contribution of Euro 0.50c per person per night will be collected by all accommodation providers. The fee is capped at 10 nights, so each guest will pay a maximum of Euro 5 per stay. Visitors under the age of 18 are excluded from paying this tax but must present a copy of their passport as proof of age.
‘Malta Today’ commented that tourism minister Edward Zammit Lewis has introduced the new environmental contribution measure to generate funds for general infrastructural improvements and to improve the kind of tourism offered by the country.
