A 47-year-old German diver who was part of a trip to the famed Tiger Beach, off the West End of Grand Bahama, has been missing since Tuesday.
A search is underway, but hopes of finding the woman are growing increasingly remote. According to reports, the diver entered the water around 10.30am and was seen to surface briefly before disappearing beneath the water again.
Some of the woman's diving equipment was recovered from the scene, and it is thought she was attacked by a tiger shark, which frequent the area and is how it got the name Tiger Beach.
Hundreds of divers have shared these waters with tiger sharks – and often lemon sharks as well – over the years with few incident recorded, but at the end of the day, these are wild animals and those taking part in the dives know the risks, albeit minimal, involved.
