A British national has died following a scuba-diving incident in Indonesia.

Robert Peter Ladd, 46, went missing yesterday (24 March) while shore-diving unaccompanied off Gili Air, one of the three Gili islands off North Lombok, east of Bali. He had reportedly entered the water at about 11am, and when he failed to resurface around mid-day the alarm was raised.

Indonesia’s national search and rescue agency BASARNAS co-ordinated the search, which involved rescue teams, police, military personnel and local dive operators and volunteers.

Ladd was located at around 1.20pm not far from his entry point, at a depth of about 12m. He was declared dead following unsuccessful resuscitation attempts.

The authorities have made no comment on cause of death but were said to be investigating possible medical, environmental or equipment-related factors.
