Marty McCafferty looks at a case where a diver encountered problems associated with, of all things, earwax. Untreated this can lead to barotrauma so make sure you look after your ears when diving.

***** THANK YOU FOR WATCHING *****
It is worth discussing the problem with an ENT. I discovered I had adult onset seasonal allergies causing eczema in my ear canal (and nowhere else on my body) that gave a location for bacteria and later a fungal infection. I didn’t even know I had allergies as other symptoms were so minor. I just always thought I produced a lot of earwax and occasionally had wet earwax. The reality is I was having chronic ear infections due to allergies.
I felt that same dizzy sensation when I went deeper underwater. Only after I resurfaced did I realized my left ear was plugged and had fluid inside. I consistently have problems with my left ear. 😢
No cotton swabs, guys. And if it’s a recurring problem, consult an ENT for proper cleaning.
Thanks!
When I was 21 in HAWAII I did a free dive quickly down to about 35 feet , somebody nearby lost a mask and I saw it , it damaged my ear and I’ve had ringing ever since. I felt a ‘piercing water’ feeling in my left ear and I’ve had ringing in that ear ever since. For whatever reason my right ear was unaffected by this quick descension to 35 feet.
It didn’t seem that deep , but since I had pretty good swimming abilities my confidence was my downfall.
This happened around 1991 , my left ear still ringing now as I type this. My brain has learned to sort of tune it out but it’s always there.
I had no idea at the time I may have averted permanent injury if I had visited a doctor for some corticosteroid drops or something of that nature , close to the injury period.
What a dumb ass I was.
It was in HAWAII
Whats the name of support for air for diving can u thel me pls because I want to that support of my ear for diving for spearing
How complicated is your Tinnitus condition, mine was very complicated, terrible and uncomfortable. I used so many meds but nothing happened but instead the pain increases. Just 2 weeks of using Doctor Madida Tinnitus herbal medicine all my disturbing noise and pain stopped, I went to hospital to be very sure that it is gone and my Medical doc confirm it that everything appear goods now and me I don’t longer feels the symptoms of Tinnitus for so many weeks now. Truthfully speaking I am so glad that all this are all gone and over because this tinnitus situation almost ruin my entire life.
Thank you. I’m an aspiring diver but I get a lot of earwax in my ears. I’ll be sure to keep them clean if I decide to get certified.
I got my scuba diving certification back in 2017 the only problem I have is that my ears gets Plugged up after I surface but they don’t plug up when I’m underwater. I have been scuba diving four years now.
I have struggled with inner ear barotrauma following a dive that hasn’t subsided even after 2 months. If I lower my head, I get a sensation of fluid filling my middle ear :-/ supposed to be going on a diving holiday in 12 days :-/
I would definitely see a dive doctor. Nothing worse that ruining a dive trip for a preventable reason.
Same bro slightly different problem but I have damaged my right ear and am meant to be going to the gold coast in a couple months
2 years later, is the inner ear barotrauma the same? Has anything worsened? Do you have ringing (tinnitus?) I got this 3 months ago being uneducated because my family never spoke of it, but now I know. ;/
@Daniel Pyrig hey. I’m happy to report that 2-3 year later I am absolutely fine, the symptoms subsided eventually. And I am diving weekly with no issues at all. My advice would be to give it chance to recover fully and then start diving again. I hope your issues heal quickly and wish you lots of diving adventures in the future.
Thanks Lee, glad you’re healed and back out there.
I wanted to also follow up with mine for anyone that might be reading.
After a year the ringing remains even after I stopped diving. Hearing quality sits at around 6000hz (the same after the injury) but it became much more bearable to live with over time. At first it might feel like life is over, but you get used to it. Now the goal is to protect hearing at all costs.
