How to snorkel and explore the wonders of Raja Ampat.
The beauty of Raja Ampat is the abundance of fantastic dive sites that are also perfect for snorkelling—the ideal location for groups of family or friends with boat scuba divers and snorkelers.
Snorkelling is a fun and relatively simple water activity that allows you to explore underwater environments and observe marine life. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to snorkel:
Choose the Right Location: Pick a suitable snorkelling location with calm, clear waters and abundant marine life. Popular destinations for snorkelling include coral reefs, shallow lagoons, and coastal areas with good visibility.
Gear and Equipment: Gather the necessary equipment, which typically includes:
Snorkel mask: Ensure it fits snugly but comfortably on your face, covering your eyes and nose.
Snorkel tube: A breathing tube with a mouthpiece for you to breathe through while keeping your face submerged.
Fins: These help you move efficiently in the water.
Swimsuit: Wear a comfortable swimsuit or wetsuit appropriate for the water temperature.
Optional: Rash guard, snorkel vest, and booties.
Prepare Your Gear: Ensure your snorkel mask doesn't fog up by applying an anti-fog solution or spitting into the mask and spreading the saliva around the glass. Rinse it with seawater to prevent fogging. Check that all your gear fits properly and is in good working condition.
Entry and Exit: Enter the water gradually, ideally from a sandy or shallow area, to avoid damaging the coral or other aquatic life. When entering, keep your mask and snorkel above water until you are comfortable.
Breathing Technique: Place the snorkel tube in your mouth, bite gently on the mouthpiece, and keep it between your teeth. Keep your face submerged in the water, with the mask on and your eyes looking down. Breathe slowly and steadily through the snorkel tube. Ensure the tube stays above the water's surface.
Floating and Buoyancy: Use your fins to help you stay afloat and move effortlessly. To descend, exhale gently through the snorkel, allowing your body to sink. To ascend, inhale a bit more deeply.
Stay Relaxed: Relax and take your time while snorkelling. The goal is to enjoy the underwater world without expending unnecessary energy.
Observe and Explore: Explore the underwater world, observing marine life, coral, and other aquatic features. Maintain a safe distance from marine life to avoid disturbing them or getting injured.
Safety First: Always snorkel with a buddy. It's safer and more enjoyable when you have someone to watch over you. Be aware of your surroundings, currents, and your limits. Keep an eye on your snorkel tube; if it submerges, you may need to clear it forcefully exhaling.
Exit Gracefully: When you're finished snorkelling, exit the water slowly and cautiously, mindful of your gear and the underwater environment.
Remember, practice makes perfect, and the more you snorkel, the more comfortable and skilled you will become. Always prioritise safety, respect the environment, and follow local guidelines and regulations for snorkelling.
