Raja Ampat, meaning ‘Four Kings’ in Indonesian, is a remote archipelago of more than 1,500 islands spanning 40,000 square kilometres within the Coral Triangle in West Papua, Indonesia. It is renowned as the most biodiverse marine ecosystem on Earth, hosting more than 1,500 fish species and 75% of the world’s coral types.
Choosing accommodation is as crucial as selecting dive sites. The region offers two distinct stays: purpose-built dive resorts that combine international comfort with remote reefs, and locally operated homestays that immerse guests in Papuan island life.
This guide details both options, what to expect, their comparisons, when each is suitable, and standout properties.

Types of Dive Resorts
Luxury Dive Resorts: High-end accommodation with premium services, spacious villas, air-conditioning, and personalised diving experiences.
Mid-Range Dive Resorts: Comfortable, well-equipped resorts offering good value, with structured dive schedules and standard amenities. These form the backbone of the Raja Ampat resort scene and suit most visiting divers.
Eco Dive Resorts: Sustainability-focused resorts built to minimise environmental impact, often powered by solar energy and eco-friendly systems. They attract guests seeking world-class diving alongside an upmarket retreat experience.

Local Homestays
Local homestays, known locally as penginapan or pondok, are family-owned guesthouses run by indigenous Papuan communities on their islands. They offer an authentic and affordable way to experience Raja Ampat, and their development over the last ten years has become a significant example of community-based tourism.
What to Expect
Homestays are straightforward, rustic, and authentic. Guests can enjoy warm hospitality, home-cooked meals, and a relaxed pace of life. Electricity might be unavailable or limited to specific hours, and amenities are basic but adequate for adventurous travelers.
Accommodation typically consists of a simple private or shared bungalow with a communal bathroom, often using a traditional mandi (a large water basin and ladle). Beds are comfortable by basic standards, and mosquito nets are usually provided and essential.
Meals are prepared by the host family, usually two to three times daily, included in the room cost. Expect dishes featuring fresh fish, rice, cassava, and vegetables—simple, nutritious, and often tasty. It’s important to inform the host of any dietary restrictions beforehand, as ingredient options are limited on remote islands.
The experience is intimate, with guests sharing the family compound, sometimes joining meals or watching children play in the evenings. Visitors are often invited to attend church services, learn some words of the local Biak or Moi language, or take guided forest walks.

The Homestay Economy
Homestays play an important role in supporting local communities in Raja Ampat. They are typically owned and operated by village families, providing direct income to remote island communities.
This model supports local livelihoods, raises awareness of marine conservation, reduces the impact of large-scale tourism, and promotes sustainable, community-led tourism.
Types of Homestays
Village Homestays: Basic accommodations in local villages, providing authentic cultural interactions and daily village life experiences.
Island Beach Homestays: Tiny huts situated directly on beaches or lagoons, often offering spectacular snorkeling right at the doorstep.
Eco-Community Homestays: More organized homestays with shared diving support or arranged excursions, while preserving a local atmosphere.

Choosing between a Dive Resort and a Homestay
The choice often comes down to three factors: budget, diving ambition, and the type of travel experience you are seeking.
Choose a Dive Resort If:
- You are a dedicated diver planning four or more dives a day
- You want professional dive guides or quality equipment rental on-site
- You are travelling as a group or couple and want comfort and privacy
- You have limited time and want a seamlessly organised trip
- Photography is a priority, and you need rinse tanks and charging infrastructure
Choose a Homestay If:
- Budget is a primary consideration
- You want a genuine cultural exchange with local Papuan communities
- You enjoy snorkelling or casual diving over intensive schedules
- You are a slow traveller who values lived experience over facilities
- You want your money to flow directly to local families
Many seasoned travellers to Raja Ampat often opt for a dual-stay plan. They start with a two- or three-night homestay to relax, snorkel at leisure, and immerse themselves in local village life. Afterwards, they spend a week at a dive resort to explore key dive sites thoroughly and enjoy modern amenities. This split-itinerary method is becoming more popular and can be booked in advance through Meridian Adventure Dive Resort.
