Does Chlorine Damage Dive Equipment? #scuba #askmark @ScubaDiverMagazine

Thanks for another informative video. I purchased a new 7mm wetsuit and hood so did a few dives in the local dive shop pool to dial in my weighting. Asked Henderson about cleaning it and they stated a few times in the pool would be ok, but 3-4 times a month for a few months could be a problem as chlorine is caustic to neoprene. What impact if any does chlorine have over all of my other gears components (Ranger LDT BCD, G2 computer, finger spool and DSMB, fins with bungee strap or stainless steel spring)?
Also, I dive in the pool a few times a month just to get away and work on skills always using my gear as configured for OW dives. My gear is not cheap so again is this wise due to the chlorine?
Thanks, Ed

#askmark so I guess you would recommend to buy a cheaper neoprene and Mask for diving in pools, if you don’t have a old neoprene. I just wonder, because in the city near I live it’s possible to go diving every week at the public pool.
I don’t know if they have chlorine because they renew the pool few years ago, so as far as I know the use an alternative, but I don’t want risk my new neoprene.
Thank you.
Most pools have some chlorine to kill nasties but, as long as you soak and wash your gear afterwards the effect should be minimal. It’s only repeated and extended exposure that will damage your gear the most.
I have a set of pool regs for this reason. I bought a lightweight set of regs that I can be a little less careful with that my MTX-Rs. I keep meaning to buy a BPW/BCD for the pool as I’ve only been in the pool with it once at week for the last 12 months and can already see the colour fading on my XDEEP BPW.
I tested the chorine in both my swimming pool and my county supplied domestic water. Surprise! The county drinking water has more chorine PPM than my pool. I also have well water. In Florida untreated well water is high in iron and stinky sulfur. Which one should I use to clean my gear?
Hey Mark! Love the content! Keep the tips coming! Could you explain what kind of swivel is best for the 2nd stage? I’m currently running a long hose and find it always pulling my 2nd stage to the right. During and after the dive the jaw fatigue is really bothering me. 90 degree? 360? Thanks! #askmark
Constantly fighting a 2nd stage sucks during a dive. An OmniSwivel style elbow can be useful to allow the hose to route in any direction but, it’s important that you check that you tighten the fitting before each dive as they can loosen over time.
I tend to dive a 90° elbow when the hose routes around the back of my neck and I don’t have a thick hood. That allows the hose to go straight past my ear.
For more clearance and a wider arc around your neck you can also find 120° elbows, they’re more rare but they do exist.
I tend to dive a 90° most of the time for the neatest routing and least pull on the hose.
Good video, request though, can y’all edit your videos? This could’ve been so much shorter if you cut out the mumbling, digging through a container that didn’t even produce the o ring you were looking for, etc.
As a viewer I want the answer but the extra stuff just makes the video longer and I have to skip around to find the info when you could’ve cut this down at least 2 minutes shorter.
Thanks for listening!
This guy just reads the question on the spot and ad libs whatever comes to mind. I would personally prepare with some talking points beforehand.
@Alias Incognito that works too, but this ad lib can work with simple clean up cuts in editing. It wouldn’t be much more effort where I can understand prepping ahead of time can sometimes take a lot longer
@WeiseGuy91 Agreed. However, it always looks he just rolled out of bed and smoked a joint before someone pushed a camera in his face. It doesn’t need to be polished, but something between mumbling and a script would be nice. But, this is all free information so who am I to be critical?
@Alias Incognito sad but true. Need better YouTubers that dive to have variety 😅
